Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

Built-In Tension Stops Sway

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

The Blue Ox WD hitch has been great for me. What I like is 1. No hitch head angle adjustment needed. 2. No greasy trundle bars. You can store the clean bars in your outside storage without messing up your compartment 3. The large auto style lug wrench provides high leverage for pulling the chains up. 3. Unit is quiet around corners.

It is working well There is rust developing on some areas but I just touch it up with rustoleum paint.

This is a good system, though it can require some tinkering when hitching up. Sometimes it's super easy (connect the bars to the receiver, loop the links to the clamps, and rotate until it clicks into place, done!) while occasionally as the ground varies one bar may resist getting loaded and you have to find a level spot to adjust it. We have found the need to change frequently which link its cranked to. In fact, a couple times I've gone to our standard setting but later had to pull over and crank a couple extra links tighter to keep the sway down. That said, it fit all the criteria for the weight range, frame mount points, etc. and has worked over multiple trips and several hundred miles so far.

I would say the powder coating has been pretty durable, there is a bit of rust developing on the clamps where there's been contact with the chains for one year. But the bars, links, and receiver are looking fine overall.

Overall, it wasn't the first model we had our eye on but it fit the situation and we are fairly happy with how it all turned out.

I had the unfortunate experience with having your new airstream 20' taken out by a hydroplaning car last month. The airstream rolled right and on to its side, and the hitch released keeping our Suburban from rolling. The stabilizer bars and chains maintained the trailer connection and eased the stop with the rear tires of ground. The hitch bent the receiver on the truck, and the only damage appeared to be one " sprung" spring bar. A good result from a bad experience!

by:

This made a huge difference, with an ordinary hitch just getting the trailer home from the dealer was a not-so-fun drive. With this hitch the trailer tows straight and smooth at any speed. A sway control hitch is an important piece of safety equipment and I recommend this one highly.

We have two of these, one on a utility trailer a year old, and one on a camper now 9 years old. They are holding up great. Just remember to use a grease gun on the pivots at least once or twice a year.

by:

We have a 23 foot Airstream we pull with a Suburban and use the Blue Ox Sway distribution hitch. We purchased this a year ago and went on 10 weekend trips last summer 6 of them over the continental divide in Colorado. This summer we have been on 3 weekend trips and once over the continental divide. We have many more trips planned. The hitch is easy to hook up and was easy to install. Etrailer was great at helping getting the correct size bars. We have pulled the trailer in rain and winds and feel very secure in any road condition we have encountered. No issues with backing up. Nice hitch I recommend it.

We have a 23 foot Airstream we with the suburban for 3 seasons now with the Blue Ox Sway Hitch. We go every weekend somewhere in Colorado. Drove through New Mexico for Christmas. That is a windy state. I did not know the wind was blowing so hard until we stop and get out. Must be working. I did put a piece if tape on the part that turns so I can see where the wrench goes and on the chain link. This helps with hooking and unhooking for reference. Enjoy.

by:

This hitch works perfectly, reduces sway to almost zero when you drive accordingly.

by:

Great system. Much better than my previous Equalizer unit. I should have ordered the 1500 lb bars as my tongue weight was just over 1120lbs. Always better to go heavier than lighter. Great service with etrailer as always!

I’ve towed over 7000 miles with this Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution hitch , with no issues. Easy to hook up and disconnect.

Have not installed hitch yet but it is a high quality item. The main reason for this review is the incredible service I got with etrailer. I had questions and called on a Saturday afternoon. The representative was able to answer all my questions except one. She explained the manufacturer, being a Saturday, was closed and ask if she could call me back on Monday with an answer. As she promised she called Monday with a complete answer for the question. At which time I order the product. This was a heavy, expensive hitch. Here it is Wednesday and it has arrived. UNBELIEVABLE SERVICE! I recieved several emails with progress on the order and could not be more pleased. Their price was the best I could find. I look forward to buying from them again when needed. Ashley the rep, that helped me was top notch and very knowledgeable with regards to the products. Thank you Ashley and etrailer.

Scary hitch!!!! Please be sure to read the proper way to operate this weight distribution hitch!!! Follow the instruction to the letter and watch several [online] demonstrations. I relied on the RV dealer to assist me and spent the day in the Emergency Room. Serious injury can result if you do not follow the proper procedures!!!

The hitch does work as advertised with great sway control and leveling of the truck.

by:

I've installed the hitch but not yet used it. However, it's all that they say it is -- sturdy, easy to install and I expect that it will last me many years.

I especially like the fact that the bars can easily be removed and that they are not greased as I also purchased a set of 1500 lb bars for use when the trailer is at max and will use these 750 lb bars when the trailer is empty or lightly loaded.

Pulled my trailer weighing nearly 10,000 lbs from NY to Houston TX. The hitch performed perfectly and kept the trailer under control in fact I barely knew it was behind me. I used the 1500 lb bars on the way there and the 750 lb bars on the way back when the trailer was empty. Im 100 happy with this purchase!

One year later and we logged a few thousand miles pulling our Rockwood Mini-lite with the Blue Ox Sway-Pro. It took a little getting used to the chain hookup but once you do it a couple of times it’s pretty easy. The hitch is awesome. It has great weight redistribution and the trailer has never swayed once. Even in strong cross winds. Very pleased with this purchase and with e-trailers price and tutorial video. They are my go to for all things towing.

by:

The Blue Ox weight distribution and sway control...truly a solid addition to my towing needs. It is very well made, finished well and works exactly as it is supposed to.
The price cannot, that I could find, be beat. Throw in the fact that Etrailer has very good videos to explain installation and operation of most of their products, then you have a winning combination.
I am very happy with the product and price.

by:

Bought it to tow a camper. Best investment I made (besides the camper itself).

by:

Great anti sway and weight distribution hitch. Worth every penny when we ran into strong cross winds in western Utah!

by:

The etrailer.com support before and after that sale was the BEST! Hard to believe how GREAT these people are!!!! The videos made installation easy. I am amazed how well built and HEAVY the Blue Ox is. I had to adjust the hitch height a few times, but now that it is done, I have NO problem quickly setting up the Sway Pro. It seem to perform well with pulling my Airstream and I consider the Blue OX well worth the money for the extra control and safety it provides.

by:

I can't say enough about the great support I have received from etrailer. After ordering the wrong hitch(my fault), the team at etrailer got me squared away. Kyle, Angela, Lazer made the swap up to a 750 pound spring bar unit seamless! The return and the new hitch went off with no problem. A word of advice when buying a hitch. Better to measure your tongue weight yourself rather than relying on the spec sheets from the manufacturer. Mine was advertised as 240 pounds when in reality it was 462. That's with everything out of the storage compartment, unit level and without the propane tank and battery.

by:

I contacted Blue Ox before ordering this setup. Gave them all the weight specs on my Tow vehicle and trailer. They recommended this weight range setup. Installation was clearly explained within the instructions included. Unfortunately I could not get the hitch to transfer any weight to the front of the truck nor could I get the truck to level out after connecting to the trailer, even after applying maximum preload to the spring bars. Leveling the trailer was simple, but weight transfer was not possible. I've requested an RMA to return this setup to Etrailer. I reinstalled my original Equalizer hitch setup that worked fine just noisy when making tight turns. I thought the Blue Ox would be an improvement.

by:

Easy to install. Great job of distributing the weight on my Ram 1500.

by:

Works like says. First trip with 28 ft RV trailer with 45 mph crosswinds and rain and trailer didn't any more than truck alone! Easy installation.

by:

This is the item that I ordered. The box the hitch was in had damage at both ends at at 3 of the corners. Thank God there was packing tape on the ends --- seems like the tape is what was holding the box together. Your shipping department needs to do a much better job of packing a heavy item like this. Per the installation instructions, it looks like I might need the 9 hole shank instead of the 7 hole shank. I need to confirm this with a knowledgeable employee before I try to complete the installation.

by:

This is my second Sway Pro on another trailer. I love that it's not a greasy mess (the bars stay clean and so easy to store) and the setup is straightforward. I've towed ~15k miles with this system and felt great confidence the entire time.

by:

Easy install, very high quality WDH. Does a great job of leveling the truck and trailer as well as controlling the sway of my GeoPro G19FD travel trailer.

by:

The quality build of the Blue Ox Sway Pro is exceptional! It actually arrived a day early
